Oleanders door Vincent van Gogh

Van Gogh beschouwde Oleanders als vrolijke, levensbevestigende bloemen die losbandig bloeiden, zichzelf contant vernieuwend. In dit schilderij uit augustus 1888 staan de bloemen in een kruk van majolica-porcelein die ook te zien is in andere stillevens die hij maakte in Arles. Émile Zola’s “La joie de vivre” is hier symbolisch naast gelegd. Ditzelfde boek gebruikte hij ook in contrast tot de bijbel in zijn Stilleven met Bijbel uit 1985.

For Van Gogh, oleanders were joyous, life-affirming flowers that bloomed “inexhaustibly” and were always “putting out strong new shoots.” In this painting of August 1888 the flowers fill a majolica jug that the artist used for other still lifes made in Arles. They are symbolically juxtaposed with Émile Zola’s La joie de vivre, a novel that Van Gogh had placed in contrast to an open Bible in Still Life with Bible of 1885.
